Dame Maggie Smith is down but not out

Don't write her off just yet. She is, as her son Toby Stephens tells me, nothing if not a fighter. "She has been offered a few stage roles but the fact is none of them has appealed to her," one of her friends adds. "Believe me, if the right part were to come along, she would grab it."

The last time Dame Maggie, 74, appeared on stage was in Edward Albee's oddity of a play, The Lady

From Dubuque in 2007. "It works simply because Dame Maggie has willed it to," said the man from The Sunday Telegraph.
Touching wood

Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, the Master of the Queen's Music, is prone to jolly japes. He was, for instance, pulling our legs when he said that he intended to compose an opera about the scandal of the MPs' expenses.

She's a brilliant actress and made of tough stuff. Would love to see her performing at the theatre.
